What is Roofing?
Roofing is a vital trade that involves everything from repairing a single tile on a domestic property to re-roofing an entire building. Essentially, wherever there's a building, there's a need for skilled roofers, whether it's for new construction or maintenance.
Different Types of Roofs
Roofing work covers a variety of structures and materials:
- Pitched Roofs: These have different angles and require various coverings, such as tiles or slates.
- Flat Roofs: These also use a range of different coverings, often involving specialized waterproof membranes.
A qualified roofer's initial task is to evaluate and interpret plans and drawings. This helps them determine the correct type and quantity of materials needed to install the roof efficiently and effectively.
Work Environment
It's important to note that roof work is almost always carried out at height. Scaffolding is a primary method of safe access for these jobs.
Career Progression
Once you're qualified at Level 2 in roof tiling and slating, the opportunities for growth are excellent. With further training, you can become multi-skilled in various types of roof installation. Your career can then progress to roles such as:
- Supervisors
- Contracts Managers
- Safety Professionals
- Business Owners
